Primary Function

The Digital Communication Specialist reports to the Director of Alumni Communications. The individual in this position plays a key role in the Northern Illinois University Alumni Association’s (NIUAA) efforts to engage alumni through communications by leveraging the Association’s digital communication channels.

Duties and Responsibilities (generally)

•Support all goals and objectives of the NIU Foundation and NIUAA.

•Work with Director of Alumni Communications to ensure that all communications executed meet strategic needs and contain messaging consistent with NIUAA and NIU brand standards.

•Consistently proof and ensure all content is updated

•Develop creative and engaging new content that will foster alumni engagement with NIU
•Manage tactical execution of blast emails to alumni communications

•Provide support for Northern Now, the digital NIU Alumni magazine

•Exhibit a keen eye for detail. Produce work that is thoroughly checked and free of errors.

•Other Duties as Assigned

Minimum Required Qualifications for this position

1. High school graduation or equivalent
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communication, public relations, marketing, or a related field.
OR -60 Semester hours plus two years’ experience in communications or marketing, with a focus on digital communications.
OR -90 Semester hours plus one years’ experience in communications or marketing, with a focus on digital communications.
OR – 3 years progressively more responsible professional experience in areas such as, communications, promotions, public relations, marketing, journalism, sales and/or the preparation of advertising materials for mass media or other closely related field.

Education and Experience Preferred

3+ years working in communications in a higher education setting and/or a masters in communication or marketing is preferred

A high level of proficiency in general office software and experience working with multimedia software, preferably the Adobe Creative Suite, is expected. The successful candidate will have experience maintaining a website; basic ability to work with HTML is ideal. The successful candidate will also have outstanding skills in collaboration, customer service, and organization.

Physical Demands

•Limited; setup and tear-down of sets for photo and video shoots. Occasional long stretches on feet for events.
