Primary Function

This position is Senior Cartographer in the cartographic services section of the Department of Geographic and Atmospheric Sciences’s Geovisual Mapping Laboratory. The Lab provides cartographic, geovisual and graphics production services in support of the teaching, research, and service missions of Northern Illinois University. The Senior Cartographer contributes to the department’s undergraduate and graduate curricula in mapping science and map design through cartographic instruction. The position provides a production leadership on client-based map and graphics production, with principal responsibilities for consulting with clients on project design and deliverables, upholding project time/cost budgets; preparing prototypes; quality control and editing; specifying print requirements; print proofing; delivery of project deliverables to client; and archival maintenance of cartographic data sets. Depending on workload, time and budget considerations, the Senior Cartographer may manage and supervise temporary or full-time cartographic staff or student workers assigned to specific projects.

The Senior Cartographer reports to the Manager of the Geovisual Mapping Laboratory, and indirectly to the Chair of the Department of Geographic and Atmospheric Sciences.

Duties and Responsibilities (generally)

The Senior Cartographer is a vital contributor to the mission of the Geovisual Mapping Laboratory and its scope of services. In matters related to client-based services, the Senior cartographer works directly with clients to establish guidelines for product quality and timely completion of projects. This requires fundamental knowledge of cartographic design principles and modern production processes -including computer cartography, digital graphics and color printing.

This position often serves as the primary liaison between the client and others involved in the production process, coordinating the delivery of a final product that best serves the client’s needs and goals. The Senior Cartographer is responsible for keeping abreast of technology and other
developments in cartographic design and production.

The Chair of the Department of Geographic and Atmospheric Sciences oversees the department and is responsible for the professional development of laboratory personal and acquisition of lab resources. Each lab has a Manager who is more directly responsible for the work assignments of personnel assigned to the lab and maintenance of laboratory resources. This position is supervised by and works closely with the Geovisual Mapping Lab Manager. The Senior Cartographer is the main professional staff person responsible of cartographic, geovisual, and graphic production in the Geovisual Mapping Lab. The latter includes client-based mapping projects developed either by the Lab Manager or the Senior Cartographer, as well as GIS projects initiated through the lab and faculty graphics projects for research or instruction. The Senior Cartographer shall consult with the Lab Manager on a regular basis on issues relating to budgeting, projects workflow and quality control. The Senior Cartographer will also regularly consult with clients to apprise them of progress and seek editorial input.
