Primary Function

The Director of Alumni Communications reports to the Executive Director of Northern Illinois University Alumni Association. The individual in this position provides a leadership role in the NIUAA’s efforts to engage alumni through communications by managing a comprehensive marketing and communications program that builds pride, reinforces the University and NIUAA brand, boosts revenues through promoting campus partners, and supports NIUAA programming.

Duties and Responsibilities (generally)

• Responsible for creation of content.
• Managing a team of skilled communicators.
• Consistent adherence to all Foundation, Alumni Association, and University brand protocols.

Minimum Required Qualifications for this position

• At least five years of experience in the field of communications, journalism, marketing or public relations.
• Direct experience targeting marketing and communications to specific constituent groups.
• Ability to listen to, and utilize experience of, alumni of NIU.
• Excellent writing, editing and verbal skills, and the use of the web, social media and emerging technologies.
• Ability to identify communication goals in the framework of the overall marketing and public relations goals and develop clear, focused communications strategy to meet those goals.
• Superior customer service skills.
• Firm grasp of brand management.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, enthusiasm and willingness to “go the extra mile.”
• Ability to meet deadlines and be accommodating to “urgent” projects.
• Ability to perform well under pressure and have the ability to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Ability to build and maintain business relationships through excellent diplomacy, negotiation, and trust.
• A Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, or Communication is required.

Education and Experience Preferred

• Marketing and communications experience in a university, other educational organization, or in a similar not-for-profit setting expressly in Alumni Relations.
• Supervisory Experience.

Working Hours 8:00 am - 4:30 pm
Hiring rate/range Comensurate with education and experience.

Physical Demands

Occasional setup and tear-down of sets for photo and video shoots. Standing on feet for long periods of time at events.
